I have no idea what either of these guys are like live, but if they’re half as good as they are in the studio, these are gonna be some good shows.

Roll up them good leaves, make yourself some ‘shroom tea, fall about on the floor tripping out beside some hipster stroking his ironic moustache. And when you wake up in A&E and they’ve pumped your guts, and you’re feeling all sad inside, spare a thought for old Graeme rattling around Blanket Towers in his smoking jacket wishing he could be in the cubicle next to you enjoying a warm vague memory of having heard something brilliant that night.

Had this on repeat for an hour earlier. Just put it on again and it is as fresh as the first listen.

These guys have absolutely killed this one, fifteen years old and they’ve released two of the best slow jams of the decade!

It’s part futuristic R&B, part funk, part synth wave, part slow jam all tied together with flawless production.

I dunno about the video though. I remember hanging out with girls in their bedrooms, smoking weed, to be a lot more awkward and with more munchies.

I hate to admit it, but, this track isn’t bad at all. A pretty decent article too, right up to:

‘If Skrillex can continue evolving as an artist then he, of all people, could possibly be the person to genuinely bring American electronic dance music up to par with the rest of the world.’

Skrillex could bring American electronic dance music up to par with the rest of the world? Hoooooold up!

What about Carl Craig, Derek May, Juan Atkins, Green Velvet, Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden, Frankie Knuckles and Felix The House Cat to name but a few. One and all American electronic dance artists that, without exaggeration, changed the world.

America has always had incredible electronic artists. The problem was/is most of America didn’t care.

Maybe he means Skrillex could be the white American artist that could make electronic dance music cool, for straight white Americans, decades after it all happened. The latest Elvis, Slim Shady or whoever.

Whatever he meant, as decent as this track is, I doubt Skrillex is the ‘Merican Electro Messiah Mr Hepburn would like him to be.

It’s back!

If you don’t know this is a great small festival that takes place in the heart of Belfast. Last summers was cancelled due to the economic climate and soaring costs.

All wasn’t lost though. Instead of having the three day hootenanny in the summer they’ve ran an amazing amount of gigs, show casing the best in both local and international folk, indie, alternate, country and whole bunch of stuff I don’t even know where to pigeon hole. I’ve seen bands that I’ve never heard of, been blown away by and in true Open House spirit, ended up having a drink with.

No line up announced as of yet. But I know who I’d like to see at it, I’m looking at you AA Bondy, I’m looking at you Gillian Welch, I’m looking at you Ryan Adams. Lets see all you lovely fuckers under one roof tearing that big sparkly tent down.

Grey Reverend - Only One

I sank to the bottom of GR’s debut ‘Of The Days’ last year. Sullen, minimal, introspective, with every note played and recorded with simplicity and honesty. The stuff of perfect folk.

I was initially as captured by his story as I was his sound and writing. Last year saw him team up with The Cinematic Orchestra, and release some interesting stuff via his tumblr and Soundcloud all of which raised him to super hero status for me.

This is the second track he’s released from his, as yet untitled, latest album to be released at an unset date this year. It sounds fuller, warmer, the folkyness offset by his jazz influences. The production has more depth too; yet it retains the simplicity that makes his work so effective. Put it on and treat yourself to something truly beautiful.

I reblogged a cover of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs track Tapes and Money by a guy called Salvation Bill on my other tumblr that flipped my wig. So much so that I had to go for a dig around to see who this guy was and annoyingly found next to nothing, bar his soundcloud where I discovered an original track The Grifter that completely blew me away.

So I did my usual fan boy ‘accost you with kindness’ thing a few nights ago trying to find out a bit more about Salvation Bill and by the power of the internet I did it!

His real name is Ollie, he was formerly a member of the Oxford based band Ute who had since renamed and reformed as The Old Grinding Young and renamed again as The Grinding Young for pedophile based reasons.

He seems like a nice young chap and has a webpage that isn’t a tumblr. I know, right? Th’ fuck? He’s from Oxford but has an AOL email address and that’s not where the weirdness (in a good way) and mystery ends. There’s only a few drawings on his site, no bio, no fart sniffing self promotion and no other material apart from the two tracks I’d already posted.

So after a few more messages with him he has now put up a tumblr here and a new track Nibiru (see below).

This project is in it’s early days and while there is nothing as exciting as fresh meat I really do think that there is something special going on here. The sound has more influences than you could shake a stick at, there’s touches of classical, soul, gospel, jazz, folk, indie, dubstep even.

The thing that really grabbed me with The Grifter and Nibiru, beyond his achingly heartfelt vocal performances, was his abilities as a story teller. You feel drawn into a world all of his creation, the characters, the sights, the smells all conveyed with beautiful simplicity.

I genuinely can’t wait to see what comes out of this.
